THE BEST OF DISCO

Disco was a fave that emerged from the late seventies fueled by The Bee Gees in the movie "Saturday Night Fever" The genre lasted for only a few years and then it was frowned upon by the establishment that once embraced it. However, there were some genuine superstars that came out of the genre.

TINA CHARLES : GREATEST HITS : Tina Charles was known mainly for 'Dance, Little Lady Dance' and 'I Love To Love' but she was much more than this. With music composed by the prolific Biddu, she should have made it big but she didn't. This CD doesn't do her justice at all. There too many gems missing. There are only eleven songs here but my favorite tracks that's not here can easily fill another CD. I will definitely get another proper Tina Charles CD in the future.Tracks here includes 'Dr. Love', I'll Go Where The Music Takes Me', 'Love Bug' and a 'I Love To Love Medley'. DOP : 4tth September 1993.

THE PLATINUM COLLECTION : THE VERY BEST OF TINA CHARLES : 16 ORIGINAL GREATEST HITS : I got this in Thailand. Though not really a definitive collection, this is clearly the better collection than the one that I have. It have the ones that was missing form the first collection. 'Take All Of Me', 'Love Me Like A Lover', 'Falling In Love With A Boy Like You', 'Amazing Grace', 'Halfway To Paradise' and the medley of 'Love Bug / Sweets For My Sweet'. Still, the gems missing are 'Rendezvous' and 'Go ( Before You Break Another Heart' ) . DOP : 19th January 2012.

SILVER CONVENTION. GET UP AND BOOGIE - THE HITS : Silver Convention was a manufactured group in the mold of Boney M who had a big disco hits with 'Fly Robin Fly' and 'Get Up And Boogie'. The rest if the tracks even after all these years just couldn't get into my memory bank. This was a budget CD or else I wouldn't even have bothered. DOP : 24th November 1996.

THE DONNA SUMMER ANTHOLOGY : Arguably the greatest start to emerged in the disco era was Donna Summer. I got her first album which is made of only songs, the super sexy 'Love To Love You Baby' and the flip side 'Try Me, I Know We Can Make It'. I loved this two unedited songs and till now I couldn't get my hands on it. The version available on this double CD here, however are the edited version. Most of her bit hits are here. 'Last Dance', 'MacArthur Park', 'Heaven Knows' and my two favorites in the long version 'Hot Stuff' and 'Bad Girls'. The post disco tracks that I like are 'On The Radio', 'Love Is In Control', 'She Works Hard For The Money' and 'This Time I Know it's For Real'. Not for nothing she is called the Disco Queen. DOP : 16th July 1994.

DONNA SUMMER : THE DANCE COLLECTION : A COMPILATION OF TWELVE INCH SINGLES : This as the title suggested are a collection of her dance hits in the long version. A big pity was that 'Love To Love You Baby' and 'Try Me, I Know We Can Make It' are not included here. Instead we have 'Last Dance', 'MacArthur Park Suite' and 'Hot Stuff'. 'Walk Away' is the only track that I appreciate here, 'cos I've already have the rest. DOP : 18th April 2008

FUNKYWORLD. THE BEST OF LIPPS, INC. : One of the biggest hits in the disco era was 'Funkytown' . Disco was on the way out but 'Funkytown' put the funeral on hold. Lipps. Inc. was yet another imaginary band created by composer cum producer Steven Greenberg who also played on the track. Only four tracks matter to me here and they are well worth the price of the whole CD. 'Funkytown'. 'Rock It', 'Hold On' and 'Designer Music'. DOP : 31st July 1993.

POINTER SISTERS : THE COLLECTION : Just one song from The Pointer Sisters would get rushing to get this CD and that's  'Slow Hand'.This song is so sweet and lovingly sung that you got to see your doctor if if the beat don't get you moving along. The other songs that matters here are the Bruce Springsteen' composition 'Fire', 'He's So Fine' and 'Should I Do It'. The rest, well I wouldn't get too excited. These few songs are enough for me. DOP : 27th December 1996.

GET DOWN ON IT : THE VERY BEST OF KOOL & THE GANG : I first heard of Kool & The Gang from the song 'Open Sesame' from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. Generally a disco group they tends to lead more towards funk when the disco genre died down. I was never much into their music. Songs of interest to me are 'Celebration', 'Get Down On It', 'Cherish' and 'Joanna'. There's another version of 'Get Down On It' remixed as Effel 65 Remix ( Radio Edit ) or whatever that it. DOP : 7th August 2001.

THE VERY BEST OF EARTH, WIND AND FIRE :  I wouldn't actually define Earth, Wind And Fire as a disco group, the same way I wouldn't call The Bee Gees a disco group but Earth, Wind And Fire did have some very big disco hits in that era. In fact, most of my memories of them were based on their disco smash such as 'Boogie Wonderland', Let's Groove', September' and 'Fantasy'. In the 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band's movie, they did a fantastic version of 'Got To Get You Into My Life' which was incidentally also the best track from that album. Earth, Wind And Fire's place in rock history is assured. DOP : 16th November 1995.

THE VERY BEST OF KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND : This I genuinely like. KC was featured on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack too with the funk driven 'Boogie Shoes'. This is a fun filled CD which will be a delight at any party. The one to shake your booty seriously are 'That's The Way ', Get Down Tonight' 'Shake Your Booty', "Give It Up',  'Let's Go Rock And Roll' and the gentle ballad 'Please Don't Go'. There's even a mega mix medley of 'That's The Way / Shake Your Booty / Get Down Tonight / Give It Up".

MEGACHIC : BEST OF CHIC : Perhaps the best thing that came out of disco is Chic. Formed by guitarist Nile Rogers and bassist Bernard Edwards, they were best know for their commercially successful disco songs like 'Le Freak', 'Dance, Dance, Dance', 'Good Times' and 'Everybody Dance'. 'Good Time'  is my favorite track along with 'Everybody Dance', The former was one of the most influential songs of the disco era. Put this on the player and if your feet don't start to move, you could have become a cripple and not being aware of it. Yes, it's that good. DOP : 12th September 1993.
