DIVAS AND DIVAS TO BE

THE ESSENTIAL BARBRA STREISAND : Barbra Streisand was and is a diva in every sense of the word. She is one of the few females who is equally well known as a singer and as an actress. She is also a director too. I've always wanted to have one of her CD. And when this double CD went on sale, I grabbed the chance. I've heard her songs once in a while and I've marveled at the way she sang but somehow this double CD just fell short of expectation for me. Or maybe there were way before my time but it really isn't. I remember liking 'Stoney End', 'The Way We Were' and 'Evergreen'. Most of the songs here just doesn't click with me. I like her later songs like 'Woman In Love', and 'Guilty' with Barry Gibb. 'I've Finally Found Someone' with Bryan Adams and 'Tell Him', her duet with Celine Dion are good. Overall, this CD just wasn't right for me. I loved the Bee Gees produced album "Guilty" though. I will definitely get it in the near future. DOP : 1oth September 2007.

BARBRA STREISAND : CHRISTMAS MEMORIES : This Christmas CD bought at discount price didn't do too well with me either. Sang with her usual lay back style, it's way too slow for me. Most of the tracks here are not the usual Christmas standard but rather obscure tracks like 'A Christmas Love Song', 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve ?', 'I Remember' and 'Snowbound'. I much prefer the time tested traditional Christmas lullaby thank you. DOP : 7th April 2005.

DIANA ROSS, ONE WOMAN. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION : Diana Ross was the other diva whom you can call a singer and an actress, although she was not so prolific an actress as Barbra Streisand. She started her musical journey in the Sixties as part of The Supremes and gradually became a solo star. Her songs with The Supremes were enjoyable to say the least, 'Where Did Our Love Go', 'Baby Love', 'You Can't Hurry Love' which Phil Collins later covered and 'Reflections'. On her own, she scored with 'Touch Me In The Morning', 'Do You Know Where You're Going To?', 'Endless Love' and 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me'. A very enjoyable CD that made you yearns for more. DOP : 7th November 1993.

EXPERIENCE THE DIVINE BETTLE MIDLER : GREATEST HITS : Though Bette Midler is nowhere near as prolific as Barbra Streisand or Diana Ross, she nevertheless belongs in the same categories as them. Other than singing, she acts too. However, there are two songs that defines her. Songs that are so associated with her that nobody can claim it as theirs. I am talking about ' From A Distance' and 'Wind Beneath My Wings', of course. These two songs along are worth the price of this CD. Not that the rest of the songs are bad, although they tends to be overshadowed by the big two. I did however enjoyed her version of 'When A Man Loves A Woman' from the movie "The Rose". Her version of this song have struck with me all these years after I've seen the movie and I'm glad I found it here. It's like meeting an old friend. Other enjoyable tracks are 'Chapel Of Love' and her version of The Beatles' In My Life'.  DOP : 6th July 1993.

THE VERY BEST OF HELEN READY :  While I wouldn't mention Helen Reddy's name in the same breath as the above, she did gave us quite a few memorable songs. She first came to prominence with her rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', Her most well known hit was of course the feminist ' I Am Woman'. My favorites from her are ' Delta Dawn', Keep On Singing', 'Emotion' and 'Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady'. On this CD, she offered her own interesting version of John Lennon's 'How' and Crosby, Still, Nash & Young's 'Our House'. DOP : 16th April 1993.

THE BEST OF ROBERTA FLACK. SOFTLY WITH THESE SONGS : Roberta Flack will forever be known for two songs. The main theme from the Clint Eastwood's movie "Play Misty For Me", 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' and 'Killing Me Softly With His Song', which won the Grammy for Song of the Year for 1973 and 1974 respectively. 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' incidentally was about the singer Don McLean. Other notable songs here are 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow', 'Feel Like Making Love', 'The Closer I Get To You' and 'Tonight, I Celebrate My Love', her duet with Peabo Bryson. A nice CD to play in the background when you are with your love one. DOP : 6th August 1993.

LINDA RONSTADT : GREATEST HITS : VOLUME ONE & TWO : There are female vocalists a plenty in the rock world but Linda Ronstadt is a different kettle of fish. She has a rock edge that leads more towards the rock sound rather than the pop sound of most female vocalists. I have these two CD on records, separately of course. I got these 2 in one from Singapore. Linda Ronstadt is a cover singer. Apart from her duet 'Don't Know Much' with Aaron Neville, I don't recall any other original materials from her. Anyway, Volume 1 have 'You're No Good', a good starter for any records, 'Silver Threads And Golden Needles', 'Desperado' and Neil Young's 'Love Is A Rose'. My personal favorite is 'Heatwave'. Volume 2 is the better disc for me for it have 'It's So Easy', 'Hurt So Good' and 'Blue Bayou'. 'Poor, Poor Pitiful Me' and 'Just One Look' are the icing on the cake. DOP : Unknown.
