THE BAD BOYS OF ROCK - THE ROLLING STONES

The original sleeve cover for Rolled Gold
The Rolling Stones. The bad boys of rock as opposed to The Beatles' good boy image. Formed in 1962, the early Stones records were mostly covers of old blues and rhythm 'n' blues standards. Spurred on by The Beatles' composing talents.,or as the stories goes, they were locked in their room by their manager Andrew Loog Oldham who wouldn't let them out until they came up with a few original songs. It was then Mick Jagger and Keith Richards began writing their own songs. One of their first hit "I Wanna Be Your Man" was a Lennon / McCartney composition given to them by The Beatles. Big as they were, I was never really into The Rolling Stones. There were too raw and unrefined for me but there was this album "December Children's ( and Every body's ) brought home by my brother that got me interested.. Made up of six original tracks that includes" As Tears Goes By" and 'The Singer Not The Songs" and non original "You Better Move On", this 1965 released was my introduction to The Rolling Stones. Their version of "You Better Move On" in my honest opinion is still the best version of this song. I will get this CD as soon as I can see it on the shelf.

ROLLED GOLD + : Since I couldn't get the "December's Children ( and Every body's ) CD, this compilation "Rolled Gold +" will have to do. Filled to the blink of their hits and signature songs, "( I Can't Get No ) Satisfaction", "Jumping Jack etc. but unfortunately most didn't work for me. I appreciate their works more in the sixties when they have The Beatles as their competitor. There exist a certain sneer in their vocals that I found appealing. This compilation was originally released as a double album in 1975 but now extended to a double CD with an additional 12 tracks in 2007. The songs here covered the period from 1963 - 1971. There is a slight hitch though. One of my favorite Rolling Stones' song, 'Out Of Time' was not the original version that I have on my vinyl record. I don't have too many favorite Rolling Stones and this track was one that grabbed you by the throat kind of song, which means I have to scout around for 'The Best Of The Rolling Stones' which contain the original version of 'Out Of Time' together with their kick-ass version of 'Poison Ivy' and 'Under The Boardwalk'. DOP : 1st September 2011.

THE BEST OF THE ROLLING STONES : JUMP BACK : For the rest you'll have to get this, which covered the  period from 1971 - 1993. As with the first CD, it's not very appealing to me.The Stones' music stop working for me after the 60s. After that lucrative period only once more in the 70's  did I feel their magic and that was from the song "Angie" rumored to be a song about David Bowie's wife. Anyway, a legend's a legend and like it or not, I have to have one or two or their CD. In this case I have three and one's a double. DOP : 8th January 1994.

DECEMBER'S CHILDREN ( AND EVERY BODY'S ) : Finally I've got this CD. The fifth album form The Rolling Stones. I bought this for the memories that it gave me and the great tracks it have. As composers, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards certainly got the chop and as performers they certainly don't lack charisma but still they lacked the confidence of The Beatles when it comes to the studio. They started this album with four covers, something which The Beatles would never do. Make up of six covers and six originals, it's ironic actually. 'cos the originals, except for 'You Better Move On' was way better than the covers. In the words of Mick Jagger, this not not really a real album but a collection of songs that have not been issued on any albums before. There is no continuation here. The originals here are all top notch. 'The Singer Not The Song', 'Get Off My Cloud', 'I'm Free', 'As Tears Go By', 'Gotta Get Away' and 'Blue Turns To Grey'. "As Tears Go By' was their attempt at writing a song like The Beatles' Yesterday'. Though it was not as popular as 'Yesterday', of the two, guess which one is my favorite. If The Rolling Stones have songs as great as these on their other albums, I'll be the first in line. DOP : 20th December 2012.
