THE GREAT CROONERS FROM THE SIXTIES

ENGELBERT HUMPERDNICK. THIS IS MY LIFE. GREATEST HITS 1967 - 1969 : In the 1960s, amid The Beatles' world domination, only two crooners matter. Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones, both managed by Gorden Mills. Arnold George Dorsey doesn't amount to much until he changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck, recorded the song 'Release Me' and the rest like they say is history. 'Release Me‘ was such a big hit that it have the distinction of keeping The Beatles' most adventurous double side singles 'Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane' off the top spot in the UK, and broke their long running of No. 1 hits. I should hate him for doing that to The Beatles but hey I love the man and his music. The song lists here are a joy to listen to. 'A Man Without Love', 'The Way It Use To Be'. 'The Last Waltz', ' Les Bicyclettes De Belsize, etc. DOP : Unknown.

ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK : I got this second Engelbert Humperdick CD for the two songs, 'Call On Me' and ’Pretty Ribbons'. Probably two of the most beautiful songs I've ever have the pleasure of  listening to. The rest are pretty good too. ' Spanish Eyes', 'Quando, Quando, Quando' and 'Wonderland By Night'.  Only song I am missing is 'Love Me With All Your Heart' & ‘A Place In The Sun'. I stopped listening to Engelbert when he loses his song writers and started singing other people's songs.  I saw the man performing once not too long ago when he was in his 70's. Full of energy and cracking jokes in between songs, he could easily put entertainers half his age to shame. DOP : 15th August 1996.

TOM JONES. THE HITSINGLES : The other one that matters, Tom Jones. The first time I heard him was 'Green, Green Grass Of Home' and that was a classic by any standard. I have two CDs of Engelbert Humperdinck but only one of Tom Jones, so I guess you know who is my favorite. Still, there are some gems to be enjoyed here. 'Detroit City', Funny, Familiar, Forgotten, Feellings', 'Delilah' and my favorite '( It Looks Like )  I'll Never Fall In Love Again' DOP : 9th February 1996.

THE VERY BEST OF TONY CHRISTIE : The first time you heard 'I Did What I Did For Maria', you would be forgiven for thinking that it's Tom Jones' pipe. Yeah, their similarities is uncanny. Tony Christie started out as a Tom Jones  clone and sadly that's how he'll be remembered by. Other than the Neil Sedaka's penned song, '( Is This The Way To } Amarillo ', most would be hard pressed to recall another song by him. I like his 'Don't Go Down To Reno' and 'Happy Birthday, Baby' though, and another song that's not here titled 'A Lover's Question'. DOP :  Unknown.
