THE BEE GEES & DISCO

The Bee Gees in my humble opinion were second only to The Beatles. There were great in the sixties and even greater in the seventies when they have, just like The Beatles before them, the top five singles in the chart. They started out with five members, Then with success, came problems when they broke up for a brief while. While there were great as a group, there went nowhere as solo artists. So they got back together and with the disco boom which they made popular, they were at the top of the game in the late seventies. Here are my collection of my CD of The Bee Gees.

TALES FROM THE GIBB BROTHERS : My first Bee Gees CD. A comprehensive 4 CD set that have everything you wanted from The Bee Gees and then some. I bought this after having won $600.00 from the local lottery and it was money well spend. I recall the time when I first bought home The Bee Gees' latest single 'I.O.I.O. c/w 'Sweetheart' with money given to me by my sister. She was in tears when she first heard it, accusing me of spending her money on a useless piece of junk. Guess which is her favorite Bee Gees song now. CD 1 have the boys at the first taste of stardom with tracks like 'Words, 'To Love Somebody', ' Massachusetts', 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You, 'I Started A Joke' right through their first break up with 'Don't Forget To Remember', and their solo hits. Highlights from the solo Bee Gees are 'Saved By The Bell' by Robin Gibb. 'Railroad' by Maurice Gibb and Barry Gibb's 'I Kiss Your Memory'.. Of the three, Robin's song was the only hit but it was not my favorite track. My favorite tracks was 'Railroad' followed by 'I Kiss Your Memory'. CD 2 have them making their comeback with 'Lonely Days' and their smash hit 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' , 'My World' and the rest of the tracks showing The Bee Gees searching for direction. CD 3 have The Bee Gees at the top of the game again with the disco boom. Starting with 'Jive Talkin', and the tracks everybody knows which are 'Stayin' Alive', 'How Deep Is Your Love', 'You Should Be Dancing', 'Love So RIght', 'Night Fever', 'Too Much Heaven', etc. CD 4 have the brothers in their third phase of fame with 'You Win Again', 'One' and a medley of their old hits with some that they've given to others. Apart from the goodies there are quite a bit of clunkers here too, I may add and I was not too pleased that they have left out ' Marley Purt Drive ' along with 'Swan Song, 'Let There Be Love' and Robin Gibb's two other noteworthy tracks 'August, October' and ' Wait A Million Years'.  DOP : Unknown.

BEE GEES GREATEST : After the dismal failure of Sgt. Pepper, The Bee Gees somewhat redeemed themselves with this collection of all their smash hits.  Rarities includes " If I Can't Have You", "( Our Love ) Don't Throw It All Away" and the only to be found on this CD, " Rest Your Love Me". This CD version includes "Warm Ride " & various remixes of the songs here which was not on the original record. I bought this CD purely for the last two songs. 'Rest Your Love On Me' was recorded by Andy Gibb and Olivia Newton John and was a country hit for Conway Twitty but it was The Bee Gees' version that was the main deal for me. DOP : 29th October 2007.

LOVE SONGS : I bought this at a discounted price for the brothers' versions of  'Emotion', 'Heartbreaker', 'Islands In The Stream', which they wrote for others and 'I Could Not Love You More' which was a beautiful song beautifully sung by Barry Gibb that goes back to the style of their old days. The new songs I just don't care too much for. Some of the later songs includes 'Secret Love',' For Whom The Bells Toll' and 'Wedding Day'  DOP : 25th May 2011.
TO LOVE SOMEBODY : A BEE GEES TRIBUTE : This was of course a tribute CD to The Bee Gees. It contain an interesting version of  'How Do You Mend A Broken Heart' by Michael Buble with vocal background by Barry Gibb. There's just about the only track I care about. I don't much like cover version. I prefer the real McCoy unless they make it something different. I got this CD for a discount too. Wouldn't pay the full price for it. DOP : 1st December 2008.

THE TRIPLE ARTISTS COLLECTION : Just when I thought I have all The Bee Gees' CDs that I need, along came this one. A 3 CDs set selling at RM 34.90, a fraction of a single CD, this is downright robbery with me being the robber and the seller a victim. “Spirits Having Flown" was a record that I've purchased when it first came out and it always have a special place in my heart.. Always wanted it and now I got it. I don't care much for their later stuffs so "Size Isn't Everything" doesn't mean much to me but I do appreciate the live CD " One Night Only" Since "Here At Last...." is not available on CD, this one will have to do. I did gave "Size Isn't Everything" a chance. I put it on as I was sleeping and played it in my car but nope, it just doesn't jell with me. Anyway two out of three isn't too bad. I would gladly buy this CD again should I lose this. DOP : 21st October 2012.
