BOB DYLAN : BIOGRAPH : The most influential American pop of the musician of the sixties,
Bob Dylan was also the most inscrutable and unpredictable figure in rock. His lyrics was so well known that politicians fro
m Jimmy Carter to
Vaclav Haval have cited them. Great he may be but I was never much into Bob Dylan though I do like a few of his songs. I bought this 3 CDs set 'cos my CD collection won't be respectable without anything from Bob, wouldn't it. Actually a single disc would suffice but I wanted more, I wanted to be surprised and wowed by the great
Bob Dylan, but sadly that was not meant to be. I found nothing new here other than those I've already heard before. Now, don't get me wrong, Bob was both a great song writer and a great poet, he could well be the greatest living poet right now but I just don't like his singing. I can't take too much of his music too.

The first disc contained
'Lay Lady Lay' a reject from the "
Midnight Cowboy' movie. Don't understand why they rejected it 'cos this was a great song. My favourite songs as sung by the man are
'Blowin' In The Wind', which was a big hit for
Peter, Paul & Mary and was one of his first song that got him noticed,
'I'll Be your Baby Tonight ',
'The Times They Are A- Changin'.Then there was
'Like A Rolling Stone', one of his nasty song which he is so good in. The other song that I like here is
'If Not For You' which was a hit for
Olivia Newton John and also delightfully covered by
George Harrison. This is one of his song that
Bob Dylan murdered, in my opinion, and he murdered many.

The second disc contained my all time favorite
Bob Dylan's song
'Mr. Tambourine Man'. This was the man singing in fine form. It was also a hit for
The Bryds. Other favorites are
'It Ain't Me, Babe' which was a hit for Johnny Cash and June Carter, and
'Positively 4th Street', another of his nasty song.
'Quinn The Eskimo' was rescued by Manfred Mann, who did a fantastic version of the song twice over, once a
s Manfred Mann and in the 70's as
Manfred Man's Earth Band. The version here is totally atrocious
. What's maddening about Bob Dylan is that he doesn't really need to sing. He can just composed and make himself a fortune but he chooses to for better or worst.

The third disc have another of my all time favorite
Bob Dylan's song,
'Just Like A Woman'. I first heard this song from the movie
"Concert For Bangla Desh" and the tune have stuck in my mind since. And then there's
'Knocking On Heaven's Door', one of the song from the movie
"Patt Garett & Billy The Kid" in which he have a small part. After all these years nobody remember the movie but everybody remembers the song.
'All Along The Watchtower' was a so so album track but was elevated to greatness b
y Jimi Hendrix's fantastic version which the man himself admitted was the superior version and which he himself have started performing the song in the Hendrix's style in his concert.
DOP : 8th October 1994.
