ONE OF THE BEST PARODY GROUPS, DR. HOOK

In the early 1970s, a peculiar group achieved incredible success through parody and humorous songs. A group led by a one eye guy with an eye patch who called themselves Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show. Undisciplined they may seems but underneath all the unruly selves, there were really making great music, most of which was written by one time Playboy magazine columnist, Shel Silverstein.

DR. HOOK. COMPLETELY HOOKED. THE BEST OF DR. HOOK :It was my 3rd brother who bought home an SP of 'The Cover Of The Rolling Stone', a hilarious parody of the music bible, Rolling Stone magazine. It got them on the cover albeit a caricature and not their actual photograph. I love their goofiness and humor. This collection does not really represent the actual music that Dr. Hook is most known for. Great as the tracks may be but it doesn't really show them goofing around except for a few songs, which there were so good at. Instead, what's here are the straight hits, 'Sylvia's Mother', 'The Cover Of The Rolling Stone', 'Sleeping Late', and a beautiful version of 'Only Sixteen'. My personal favorites are 'Everybody's Making It Big But Me', and 'Sweetest Of All'. Nevertheless, this CD is still a keeper. Keep you wanting more. Highly recommended. DOP : 20th June 1992.

DR. HOOK REVISITED : I stumbled upon this rare gem of a CD in one of the CD shop in town and I grabbed it. It shows the group at their goofy best. 'Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball', 'Carry Me, Carrie' and 'Roland The Roadie And Gertrude The Groupie', a song I've loved from one of their early album that I've had. 10 tracks in this time and age..? Well, this is one time when quality won over quantity. DOP : 6th October 2002.

THE COLLECTION : I still love Dr. Hook and I still haven't have enough of them. I got this CD 'cos there were quite a numbers of songs here that I don' have and the ones that I've already have, well they are live versions. I figured this was a good deal. Well, unfortunately, it was not to be. These CD was a rip off from the record company. Only songs that I like are the absurdly short 'Do Downs', which was a parody of 'Camp town Races' and 'I Got Stoned  And I Missed It' .With these 3 CDs, I figured I've had everything I need from Dr. Hook but there's still one more song that I love and I've been missing all these years. 'You Ain't Got The Right' have just the right amount of bitter sweetness that's seldom display in a Dr. Hook's song. I first heard it from Olivia Newton John and man oh man, I've gotta have that song, one way or another. DOP : 14th October 2005.
