I have loved John Denver ever since I heard my neighbor playing his record. My neighbor doesn't really buys a lot of records but when he did buy one, he will played it to death. I could have tired of John Denver but I didn't which said a lot about the quality of his music. My first encounter with John Denver was through an episode of Mystery Movie where he played a deputy sheriff.. I don't remember much of that show except that he was always seen tuning his guitar and singing a few tunes. He didn't actually sing any songs in that show though unlike Rick Nelson who used that same show to promote his latest single 'Garden Party'.
JOHN DENVER'S GREATEST HITS : Throughout the seventies, John Denver was one of the most successful singer / songwriters in the world. He first came to prominence when his song 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' was recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary and reached No.1. Incidentally that song was also my first introduction to the music of John Denver. His own rise to fame was through 'Take Me Home, Country Roads'. I somehow got my sister to buy this album and it made me a lifetime fan. All his classics are here and my all time favorites are 'Take Me Home, Country Roads', 'Follow Me', 'Starwood In Aspen'. There's also his original version of 'Leaving On A Jet Plane'. Initially I don't like 'Sunshine On My Shoulder' but it grew on me and now it's one of my favorite John Denver's song. Another fave track is 'Goodbye Again'. When I bought a later version of his Greatest Hits CD, I gave this CD to my sister. Unfortunately the songs there are not the original version. Luckily my understanding sister gave it back to me. DOP : 12th January 1996.
JOHN DENVER'S GREATEST HITS. VOL. 2 : The songs here were recorded when John Denver was red hot. 'Annie's Song' 'Welcome To My Morning', 'Fly Away', his duet with Olivia Newton John, 'I'm Sorry', ’Thank God, I'm A Country Boy', ‘Back Home Again' and one of the most beautiful song ever written 'My Sweet Lady'. Like the previous CD, I gave this to my sister and then ask for it back. I've two other John Denver's album 'Windsong" , 'Spirits" and "An Evening With John Denver" which I loved and wanted to buy but unfortunately it omitted his beautiful version of 'Today' and for that I am still waiting for the next edition. DOP : Unknown.
THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLECTION : I got this double CD to complete my John Denver's collection. It even have my one favorite song from the entire "Spirit" album, 'Let Me Look In Your Eyes'. ' How Can I Leave You Again' and 'I Want To Live' are two later John Denver's songs that I like. The rest of his hit songs are here but unfortunately there are mostly all remakes. Because of this, I was forced to be an Indian giver and got back the originals which I gave to my sister.. I got this CD quite cheap 'cos I think they got the price label mixed up. DOP : 28th July 1996.
A CHRISTMAS TOGETHER: JOHN DENVER & THE MUPPETS : I've love this album ever since I've got it on record and have spend a few years looking for it in CD. I found it at a flea market and grabbed it. The charms of John Denver & the playful Muppet made this a Christmas album unlike others. Their version of 'Twelve Days Of Christmas' is hilarious. The same with 'Christmas Is Coming' and 'Deck The Halls'. I used to remember loving 'When The River Meets The Sea' but somehow as the years rolled by, it don't seems so sweet to me now. Either time have change or I have changed. DOP : 20th February 2011.
JOHN DENVER'S CHRISTMAS : This is the serious John Denver's Christmas CD, unlike the goofy one with The Muppets. There's only one original song 'Christmas Like A Lullaby' together with other Christmas classics like 'The First Noel', 'Away In A Manger' and a personal favorite 'Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer'. Originally titled "Christmas Like A Lullaby", there are three extra tracks here. And so with this final CD, my John Denver's collection are completed. On second thought, I'm still waiting for the next re- issue of “An Evening With John Denver". DOP : 15th December 2011.
I have been a fan of John Denver since late 70s. I have managed to collect 11 LPs of John Denver so far.
ReplyDeleteAmongst so many John Denver's songs that I like, I would like to single out "Back Home Again". I am simply mesmerized by this song.
Wow.....u were a bigger fan of John Denver than me....yeah I agree with you that 'Back Home Again' was a great song and it is easy to sing to accompanying with a guitar. Pity that he have to go the way he did......
ReplyDeleteBack in early 2000s, a Japanese female singer, Emi Fujita, recorded her version of "Today". I grew to like her so much that I bought 3 CDs to her, "Camomile", Camomile Extra" and "Camomile Blend".
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Emi Fujita but for me the definitive version of 'Today' wss by John Denver. He sang it oh so beautifully.....
